Space-tech challenge opens submissions for local talent to develop Africa’s geospatial readiness

Press Release 15 Sep - 12:56 SAST

Information from RIIS

Space-Tech Challenge 2020 is now open for submissions from innovators, entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses across Africa. The challenge aims to drive Africa’s geospatial readiness through local talent, and targets downstream space-tech applications in agriculture, insurance, retail, sustainability and conservation.

Proposed solution must use geospatial intelligence to serve one or more of the four focus sectors, which each have their own brief. The challenge opens on 1 September 2020, and applications close on 16 October 2020. Online pitches are scheduled to take place during Geo Week in November 2020.

Ten finalists will be selected to showcase their solutions to a global audience at GEO Week 2020, an intergovernmental earth observation conference. They will also receive one-month business development support through the Research Institute for Innovation & Sustainability (RIIS), and ortho-ready satellite imagery from Maxar’s archive (10x 25 km2 allocated per finalist up to the value of $75 250) to develop their solutions.

The winning solution will receive three month’s access to Maxar’s SecureWatch Premium subscription for on-demand access to high-resolution satellite imagery to the value of $12 500 (5 GB), along with four months online incubation and virtual mentorship, and ongoing access to a peer-to-peer network. Second and third place winners will also SecureWatch Premium access for three months to the value of $5000 (2 GB).
