Kongsberg Geospatial and Vricon have integrated their technologies to improve drone mission safety in urban environments. Vricon’s global high-res 3D terrain data integration into Kongsberg Geospatial’s IRIS UxS ground control station addresses flight safety by accurately plotting the altitude and position of obstacles like buildings and towers, and real-time line-of-sight calculations.

It is a useful tool for collision avoidance in situations where it is necessary to operate unmanned aircraft in near proximity to buildings, powerlines, radio towers, and other infrastructure. Real-time line-of-sight calculations can also be used to predict problem areas for signal propagation and to help ensure effective sensor coverage.

IRIS UxS is an airspace situational awareness system which provides unmanned systems (UAS, UUV, USV) operators, with the necessary situational awareness to safely operate these systems beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS). It presents users 2D and 3D map and terrain data, aeronautical information such as aerodrome locations, obstacles and airspace, and real-time data from sensors, cameras, and weather data sources – all in a single display that is customisable on a per-mission basis.

Kongsberg Geospatial’s IRIS solution is already being used to conduct BVLOS pipeline inspection flights in the Niger Delta using Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 unmanned aerial system.
